Eldohub Hosts Transformative Agri-Tech Data Governance Workshop in Kenya
#D4DataGOV
This past week, on the 10th and 11th of July 2025, Eldohub was honored to host a pivotal 2-day workshop focused on Data-Driven Decision Making for Agri-Tech in Kenya. This collaborative effort brought together members of 30 Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) from eight Kenyan counties (Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Kakameja, and Elgeyo Marakwet), alongside agricultural extension services, innovators, and policymakers
The workshop, supported by the Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV) through the Europe Action on Data Governance in Africa, with contributions from Global Gateway, the European Union, Germany, Finland, Belgium, and France, aimed to bridge the critical gap faced by smallholder farmers in leveraging digital innovations. Despite Kenya’s championing of technology adoption, many farmers struggle with limited digital tools, poor connectivity, and data marginalization. This initiative directly addresses these challenges, emphasizing the importance of “leaving no one behind” in the digital transformation of agriculture.
Key discussions and hands-on sessions included:
We broke down Kenya’s Agriculture Data Governance Framework into actionable insights for grassroots organizations and farmers. Participants learned how this framework directly impacts their daily operations, ensuring they understand their rights and roles in the evolving digital agricultural landscape. This wasn’t just theory; it was about connecting policy to practice for their communities.
Farmers got real-world demonstrations and experienced the immediate impact of cutting-edge Agri-Tech, exploring the KIAMIS farming & farmer data and how AgriBora simplifies market access, witnessing the precision of drones for smarter farming, and how remote sensing from the Kenya Space Agency provides vital land and climate information – all these tools and solutions designed to be relevant for their fields.
A crucial session led by experts from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) put farmer privacy at the forefront. Participants delved into practical ways to safeguard sensitive agricultural data, emphasizing the importance of informed consent, ethical data collection, and secure data sharing across the entire value chain. This focus on trust and responsible data use was particularly vital as we simultaneously tailored capacity-building efforts for women and youth within CBOs, recognizing the role they play.
“Through this training on data, farmers and CBOs are not only learning about data, but they’re also gaining the confidence to use it to make informed choices for their communities. We’ve seen firsthand how building local capacity unlocks potential, fostering a climate-resilient, productive, and inclusive agritech system that can strengthen Kenya’s national food basket.” Laban Bore, Data Scientist at Eldohub.
The workshop utilized a participatory GROW methodology (Goal, Reality, Options, Way Forward), blending theory with practical applications through interactive activities, case studies, hands-on exercises, and group discussions. Participants explored how citizen-generated data (CGD) can directly monitor and drive change, ensuring that the voices of marginalized groups are amplified.
Through initiatives championed by Eldohub, we’re actively breaking down barriers so that even small-scale farmers and agribusinesses in Kenya’s most remote, low-connectivity areas can genuinely access, understand, and harness the power of Agri-Tech services. This isn’t a solo effort; it’s a testament to the powerful collaboration among diverse stakeholders, from dedicated Community-Based Organisations and vital agricultural extension services to key government bodies like the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) and the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), alongside our international partners.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all partners and participants for making this workshop a resounding success.
